About Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is part of the Canary Islands, an archipelago of seven islands located in the Atlantic coast on Northwest Africa, being the southernmost autonomous community of Spain.
It is the second most populous island of the Canary Islands after Tenerife, and the third most populated island in Spain. Its capital, Las Palmas, was founded back in 1478, before the conquest of the island in 1483 by the Crown of Castile, as a base for the invading Castillian army.
A third of Gran Canaria’s surface is a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO given its climate and landscape variety. In that sense, while your stay in the island, do not forget to visit its natural protected spaces such as Rural Park of Nublo, Maspalomas Dunes and Palmitos Park. The Painted cave of Galdar is the most representative archaeological site and is worth to be seen; and do not miss its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and to take a bath in Las Canteras beach.
